Parshas Devarim (Shabbos Chazon)
... כי שנאת חנם רדפנו אוי מה היה לנו
As Moshe begins to speak to Bnei Yisroel, he informs them: "I am not able to carry the burden (of the people) by myself." It appears as if Moshe Rabbeinu, the holiest of our prophets and the fearless leader of his people for so many decades, is saying that he is tired of his job and ready to step down or share responsibilities! This cannot be so, since Moshe lived to one-hundred and twenty years old and was never sick or weak or incapacitated. What, then, is the meaning of his words?
The Izhbitzer, R' Mordechai Yosef Leiner zt"l, elucidates these words and says that Moshe was trying to hint to the people a special message. Moshe Rabbeinu was chosen by Hashem to lead the Jewish People out of Egypt, to receive the Torah on Har Sinai and navigate them through the perils of forty years in the desert. However, bringing them into the Holy Land was not part of his job description. This was to be the legacy of Yehoshua Bin Nun. Moshe understood this but still felt bad and hoped that this decree could be changed.
Thus, he informs the people: "לא אוכל לבדי" I cannot effect a change in the decree against me by - "אין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורים" - "A prisoner cannot release himself from prison." I need you Klal Yisroel to daven on my behalf and beseech Hashem to allow me to enter Eretz Yisroel. But the people didn't get the message and responded "טוב הדבר אשר דברת לעשות" - "It is good what you said to do." This sealed Moshe's fate and he was required to appoint future judges and leaders for the people. A bit frustrated, Moshe announces that he appointed "אנשים חכמים וידועים" - but not "נבונים" - "(Men of) understanding" since the people had not understood his true intentions.

We are all aware that the Bais HaMikdash was destroyed because of "Sinas Chinam" - baseless hatred, or hatred for no reason. For no reason? You don’t just wake up in the morning and randomly hate someone! The reason we sometimes feel negatively towards others is because they bother us! Maybe they are obnoxious or maybe they remind us of someone we dislike. We always have a reason - not necessarily a good reason - but a reason nonetheless! "Sinas Chinam" is really “hatred for no good reason” rather than “hatred for no reason.” As a result, Klal Yisroel must work on "Ahavas Chinam" - “Love for no good reason”! You don’t have to have a very good reason to show love, respect or kindness to a fellow Jew. Just love all Yidden because they are Yidden.
This is the Kedusha of Klal Yisroel and through it we will witness the imminent arrival of Moshiach with a deep appreciation and a happy heart, and may this be the last sorrowful Tisha B'av we shall ever know!
